What will I see on the tour

No matter which tour you join us for, you will learn the history of the area - knowledge which has been handed down in the oral tradition from one generation to the next. This history has culminated from more than 800 years of occupation in the Kaikoura region.

This is no ordinary tour and right from the start you’ll
appreciate your guides deep connection to Kaikoura; as they’re from the local
sub-tribe Ngati Kuri.

Firstly, travel to Nga Niho Pa; although no longer inhabited
it was once a refuge.  You’ll spend an
hour or so learning about this protected site and customs of the area.

As you progress to
other sites intergenerational legends are shared, bringing the stunning
landscape alive.  You’ll see the recent
workings of Ruaumoko, God of Earthquakes and join in activities including
weaving with harakeke, the native flax.

After a short stop
for light refreshments with family, travel to a remote stand of forest to
discover medicinal properties of plants and trees and how the forest was a food
source.  The tracks are flat, and the
walking pace is leisurely; as you listen, touch and smell your way through
these remarkable surroundings, where trees have stood for more than five
hundred years.

As your time concludes, you’ll realize you have acquired
rare insight into Maori people and their view of the natural world and spiritual
values.  This tour may well be one of the
most rewarding and insightful things you do in New Zealand.
